"Narrator Jennifer Hale's outstanding performance brings this story of alien invasion to life...Hale's range of differentiation is masterly as she animates all the quirky characters Kira meets. From the rough, snarky slang of ex-military woman to the half-mad musings of a human "ship mind," every unique voice enhances the listening experience." -- AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award winner

Library Journal Reviews
Xenobiologist Kira Navárez's life is coming together. Though she has moved throughout space researching the suitability of moons for possible colonies, she is finally ready to begin a rooted life. The night before she is to disembark from her current station, she is called to investigate a mysterious reading only to fall into a hidden cave to discover obviously alien artifacts. As events begin to spiral out of control, Kira finds herself bonded to a mysterious "xeno" weapon and racing to save humanity from an unwinnable intergalactic war and intricate political machinations. With a huge cast of ever-changing crews of supporting characters, this adventure dashes from government testing to archaeological finds to space battles. Entire crews are painstakingly introduced only to be immediately removed from the plot. While Kira and many of her cohorts are deftly drawn, most other characters are stereotypical and at times virtually indistinguishable. Reader Jennifer Hale admirably presents the tale with excitement and urgency. Unfortunately, even her venerable talents can bring only so many characters to life. Still, this quest offers an intriguing plot with enough twists and turns to engross listeners. A glossary of terms and characters at the end of the audiobook contains additional tidbits and explanations. VERDICT Paolini is an auto-buy, and despite the abundance of minor characters to keep track of, his devoted fans will welcome this newest addition to the action/sf genre.—Lisa Youngblood, Harker Heights P.L., TX
